When using lead-free solder, an increased oxidation of the wettable area of the tip will be experienced. These oxides must be removed regularly otherwise it will make the tip completely unwettable and no longer usable. The conventional method for cleaning with a wet sponge is often not applied with the required attention. With the WDC dry tip cleaner the surplus solder can be removed by tapping the tip on the soft edge of the collector box. The final cleaning is then done by pushing and turning the tip in the metal wool. After cleaning there is still a fine layer of solder on the tip avoiding fast oxidation of the iron layer.
